The early 20th Century was marked by a period of enlightenment for African Americans which led to a movement of diversifying leadership throughout the nation. Members of the Divine Nine have played key roles in the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement and the infusion of African Americans into the American political arena.
